Choosing the Right Social Media Platforms to Reach Your Target Market
In today’s busy world of entrepreneurs and small business owners, I know how difficult it can be to prioritize and wear all the hats for daily operations, while also finding the time to manage your business’ social media presence most effectively.
Every day, business owners strive for success and ease. Excelling in your profession, managing a team, building a reputation of first-class products/service and support, and hopefully finding some sort of work-life balance (is that a real thing?).I mean, you want to do it all -- and handle it “like a boss” -- am I right?
Well, a wise man named David Allen once said: “You can do anything, but not everything.”
Our interpretation of this is:
"You can do anything, but not everything all at once."
As with all things in life, laser focus is the key. Keenly focusing on the end game, your target audience, their pain points, how your product or service will help them, and how you will get there is what will bring optimal success.
STEP 1: FOCUS YOUR EFFORTS
In your social strategy planning, choose just one or two social media platforms to focus on that will allow you to best engage with your target demographic. Create custom content for that audience. Build a following.
Once you are confident in those platforms, consider branching out to other applicable social media platforms.
When deciding on the best social media platform(s) to effectively engage with your unique audience, be sure to take these varying demographics into careful consideration. They'll help you find YOUR tribe!
- FACEBOOK -
1.8 billion monthly users, even mix of genders, most Gen-X (39-53). Decline in teens using Facebook now, due to popularity of YouTube, Instagram and Snapchat for this age group.
Best posts to share: personal content, building relationships by asking questions, blog posts, creative contests.
- TWITTER -
317 million monthly users, slightly higher income than Facebook ($50-75K+), younger users (16-29).
Best posts to share: short and sweet video clips, real-time events, how-to videos, trending articles with images/videos, product teasers, infographics, user-generated content.
- INSTAGRAM / SNAPCHAT
- audience skews very young (18-29), lower income range than Facebook, skews female, visually-based, lots of influencers to connect with.
Best posts to share: quotes over photos, insider or behind-the-scenes content, how-to series, personal stories, influencer marketing collaborations.
- YOUTUBE
- broad demographic (one of the biggest by population and popularity, audience ranges 18-34 and age 75+), mobile viewers.
Best posts to share: testimonial or product review videos, how-to demos, community events, influencer marketing collaborations, pranks/comedies.
- LINKEDIN
- LinkedIn skews more male, higher income ($75K+), business based, ages are across the board but younger people using for different reasons (job search and networking).
Best posts to share: curated content, industry news, professional expertise, business tips.
- ALIGNABLE
- Alignable may be a considerably new platform but it certainly deserves a mention. This networking platform focuses on community and knowledge sharing, connecting business owners to each other and the resources they need to succeed.
Best posts to share: curated content, industry news, professional expertise, business tips.
Once you know which social platform is preferred by your niche audience, then you can create custom content to engage with them in a way that best captures their attention and creates a relationship with your unique business and brand. Because, don’t forget, social media is about being social.
